GROENVLEI is situated 64km from Graaff-Reinet, the largest town in the district. Graaff-Reinet, the "gem" of the Karoo, founded in 1786, is the oldest town in the Eastern Province and the fourth oldest town in South Africa. A large number of buildings spanning the Cape Dutch to Victorian eras has been preserved and restored.  Graaff-Reinet also has more proclaimed national monuments than other town in South Africa (220 in total).

Approximately 40km east of GROENVLEI is the picturesque village of Nieu-Bethesda. Nieu-Bethesda was made famous by the "Owl House" which was the home of Helen Martins (1898 - 1976)
